From its beginning in
1989, the research department at ETS has been an integral part
of overall agency operations. Under the direction of Betsy
Wells, Ph.D., the clinic's research team has been
involved in a number of important studies
designed to enhance understanding of the treatment of
addictive disorders.
Research conducted at ETS has been funded by
government agencies, private foundations and
corporations including: the National Institute on Drug
Abuse, the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment, the
Hilton Foundation, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation,
and the Schering-Plough Corporation.
Below is a brief listing of recent ETS research
projects:

Reducing HIV/STD Risk Behaviors
- a NIDA-funded project to develop
and test interventions to minimize the risk of
sexually transmitted diseases for men in drug abuse
treatment. The study is part of the National Drug
Abuse Treatment Clinical Trials Network.

Project AWARE - a NIDA-funded project to develop
and test brief motivational interventions to reduce
drug-related and sexual risk behaviors among
injection
drug users.

Stages of Change and Cocaine Treatment - a
NIDA-funded study examining the impact of a brief
motivational enhancement outreach intervention on
cocaine users' readiness to change their addictive
behaviors.

Cocaine Alternative Treatment Study - ETS served
as one of six sites in this national examinaton of
the efficacy of auricular acupuncture as a component
in the treatment of cocaine dependence. Funded by
the Hilton Foundation and federal agencies.

Clinical Trials Network: Washington Node - ETS is
participating as a community-based treatment program
site in this NIDA-funded effort to bridge the gap
between addiction treatment and research. ETS'
Executive Director and Research Director are serving
as co-principal investigators in the project.

Methadone Maintenance in Primary Care - a Robert
Wood Johnson Foundation-funded project designed to
evaluate the feasibility of providing methadone
treatment in a primary care setting. The
project was conducted with the Harborview Medical
Center.

Marijuana Treatment Project - ETS served as
one of three sites in this national study
of approaches to therapy for marijuana
dependence. The study was conducted by
University of Washington researchers under a grant
from the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment.

Levels of Service and Contingency Management in
Methadone Treatment - a NIDA-funded study conducted
in collaboration with the Seattle V.A. Medical
Center. The study examined the impact of
different levels of treatment services and different
consequences for continued illicit drug use on
methadone treatment outcomes.
